Reference Samples for Replacement Parts

Nickels may request site samples from existing jobs to create replacement parts. Our internal Control samples should only be used for replacement parts not related to doors or panels side by side with the doors. If the customer chooses not to send a site sample, then they assume full responsibility for the order – Nickels will not replace any order under warranty that does not follow this disclaimer.

Paint Disclaimer

Our painted cabinets are constructed using a combination of solid wood and HDF (highdensity fiberboard) as our base material. All our painted cabinets are hand finished using a multistep sanding process. To ensure longevity our coloured paints include a hardening catalyst and are baked in an oven for added durability. Nickels Cabinets typically recommends applying paint onto one-piece or two-piece HDF doors in order to avoid the development of hairline cracks on the door face. When a painted finish is applied to a 5-piece door, the joints will telegraph through the surface, inevitably creating hairline cracks on the door face. These cracks in the joints are considered normal and acceptable and are not covered under warranty. Overspray on the back of a 2-sided piece is not a warrantable defect.

Care & Maintenance for Painted Cabinets

We recommend using a damp wet cloth with a mild dishwashing liquid to remove oil, grease, food residue or common spills. If dishwashing soap does not work for stubborn marks please use a cleaner of your choice on the back of a door first to ensure it will not damage the surface of your cabinets. Avoid polishes with wax, silicone or petroleum solvents which can cause a film build up and a yellowing effect over time.

Customers that take care of their cabinets properly will enjoy cabinets for many years. We recommend cleaning all surfaces, front and back and all four edges on a regular basis and especially when there is a spill. We recommend paying particular attention to the bottom edge of doors and drawers fronts of base cabinets as this area is often neglected.

Wood Characteristics

Wood has long been admired for its distinct and unique characteristics. All wood species undergo a gradual aging process that will enhance the texture, colour, and grain patterns in the wood. The pronounced features of each wood species give a uniqueness and timeless appeal that can only be found in nature. Each tree nourished by the climate and soil conditions in which it grows manifests its own unique characteristics, individually responding to the elements around it including moisture and wind. Furthermore, as it draws minerals from the soil, a tree integrates those materials into its fibers, at times forming dark lines or “mineral deposits”. These characteristics are particularly evident with our lighter stained finishes. While we make every effort to ensure that all of our finishes are consistent with our samples, variations in graining, knots, mineral deposits, and colour are inherent in wood and are considered acceptable.

Each species of wood we offer has its own unique features. To make sure you understand what to expect, please review the material specifications for each species in the catalog.

According to the Architectural Woodwork Institute:

“Wood is a hygroscopic material, and under normal use conditions all wood products contain some moisture. Wood readily exchanges this molecular moisture with the water vapor in the surrounding atmosphere according to the existing relative humidity. In high humidity, wood picks up moisture and swells; in low humidity wood releases moisture and shrinks. As normal minor fluctuations in humidity occur, the resulting dimensional response in properly designed construction will be insignificant. To avoid problems, it is recommended that relative humidity be maintained within the range of 25 – 55%. Uncontrolled extremes – below 20% or above 80% relative humidity – can likely cause problems.”

Nickels takes great care to maintain an environment that falls within the acceptable range for wood products. As such, any problems that occur after the product has left our facility will not be covered by our warranty but will become the responsibility of the storage company prior to installation, the general contractor during site storage and installation, or the homeowner after occupancy.y to any email with UNSUBSCRIBE as the subject.

Grain Matching Disclaimer

By default, a door classified as HGM (Horizontal grain match) or VGM (Vertical grain match) indicates that doors and/or drawers on an individual cabinet will be cut from the same piece of material resulting in a horizontal /vertical grain match spanning the width of the individual cabinet. In order to have grain matching span a run of cabinetry and parts, each item will require an attached CC-CHGM (Continuous Horizontal Grain Match). If these charges are not applied, Nickels will only match the grain spanning the width of the individual cabinet. When continues grain matching from cabinet to cabinet it’s best to keep in mind that there are size restrictions due to sheet size.

Natural Lacquer on Wood Disclaimer

All wood species have their own unique texture, colour, and grain patterns. Natural Lacquer provides a nice finish to show off these natural characteristics of the wood. But due to the nature of real wood, we are not in control of colour variation. On a 5-piece door, the wood colouration may vary within the door. Or there could be colour variation within sequence matched veneer. Since this is a natural characteristic of wood the colour variation would not be covered under warranty.

Tip On for Wood and Painted Doors

Nickels allows tip on for drawers and doors that have a painted or stained finish, however continuous touching of the face of the doors will result in oil transfer that can leave lasting residue that may or may not be removable. No warranty will be grated due to handling/use over time while using tip on. For longevity Nickels recommends using handles to open and close all of your cabinet doors.

Form / Radius Door Styles Disclaimer

These door styles cannot be grain matched within an individual cabinet or continuously grain matched from cabinet to cabinet. If a replacement part is needed please note the new part will not match what is currently on site. We recommend that all faces side by side be replaced which will ensure that the doors are cut from a sequence board making them look similar. If you decided to replace one face a warranty will not be supported after the fact.

This door utilizes a combination of both solid wood and veneer. Color variations can and will be accepted. Nickels does make an effort to avoid extreme color variations. As the material mature, it is normal to expect a “blending” of colors and a minimization of variations. Warranties claims for variations in color due to solid wood and veneer will be highly scrutinized.

REPLACEMENT – We do not recommend you replace only one door/Drawer front, due to this door style be cut from a sequence board your replacement face won’t look similar in colour and grain with you already have on-site. The best way to proceed would be to replace all faces within a series, or run of cabinets and parts.

Max Door Dimensions Disclaimer

5 piece doors / Recessed 1 piece composite door: 47 7/8”H will be the max height without a mid-rail. Doors taller than 47 7/8” H to a max height of 67 7/8” H will have a mid-rail. Any door taller than 67 7/8” will not be warrantied. Doors are limited to be 23 7/8” in width and any door requested to be wider than 23 7/8” will not be warrantied. The use of doorstraightening hardware on 5 piece doors will be limited to the non-hinged side only. Slab door: will be warrantied up to 67 7/8” H. Anything over this height may warp and will not be accepted as a warranty unless you have ordered with the DM-STRAIGHT door straightener.

Warping

Nickels Cabinets has been certified by the CKCA and follows the standards set by the CKCA to determine the acceptable tolerance for warp for doors. Any warp within these tolerances will be considered normal and acceptable and is not covered under warranty. See below for tolerance range.

CC-GAP & CC-NOGAP Disclaimer

When two doors are pinned together (using CC-GAP & CC-NOGAP) at the joint it may cause the two doors to concave or convex. This is due to min warping tolerance that is allowed per door. If you choose this option, please understand that any issues related to warpage will follow the same disclaimers as maximum door height and warpage as per CKCA and we continue to encourage you to order the door straightener (DM-STRAIGHT).

CKCA 4.2.5

Doors – Maximum warp – Doors less than 32” (812mm) in height shall have a maximum deflection of 3/32” (2.5mm). Any door greater than 32” in height shall have a maximum deflection of 3/16” (5mm). 5-piece wood doors 50” (1270mm) or greater in height should have a midrail. Doors shall also be installed and aligned so that they are square with the cabinet and can operate freely without excessive looseness or binding. Installed doors shall have a device sufficient to hold the door closed. We always recommend that you add to door over 67 7/8 the door straightener (DM-STRAIGHT).

CKCA Certification and Standards

CKCA Certification and Standards

Nickels Cabinets has successfully completed and passed all requirements for materials and performance tests and has subsequently been awarded certification under the CKCA Construction and Material Testing Standard for Kitchen Cabinets and Vanities (January 2009).

The CKCA Construction and Material Testing Standard for Kitchen Cabinets and Vanities was developed to establish a certification for Canadian made cabinetry that would be recognized by architects, designers, retailers, and regulatory authorities across Canada.

The standards were developed by a technical committee of key stakeholders within the Canadian kitchen cabinet industry who were keenly aware of the need to build consumer confidence in Canadian made products through the promise of consistent quality.

All testing is performed by a Standards Council of Canada recognized testing laboratory. Once testing is complete, results are sent to the CKCA Certification Program Office, where the CKCA will award certification based on the resulting report recommendations.

Consumers can be confident that all products manufactured by a certified member either meet or exceed the stringent testing standards required for CKCA certification.
